“Whatcha gonna do?”

For over a month, I have been shocked at the level of antisemitism I have seen in this country. As a child of a father who was in WWII, I have been aware of the Jewish Holocaust. I have seen the pictures and read much about what the Nazis did to them. The level of suffering is almost incomprehensible, and those who perpetrated it were pure evil. Full stop…end of sentence.

I have no problem with people protesting a war they do not agree with, but those who carry signs that say “Gas the Jews” or “Hitler was Right” are either ignorant of history or evil themselves. I will bet that yes, some of those who carry those signs are evil, but for the most part, when I see the students, I believe they are historically ignorant.

Do they know, for example, that Hitler killed about fourteen million people? Yes, he came for the Jews, but he also came for many Christians, political dissenters, the physically and mentally handicapped, the gypsies, Slavic people, Poles, and the gays. No one was exempt if they were considered an enemy of the Reich. Many who started out in Hitler’s good graces were “retired” when his paranoia got the better of him.

You see, when the killing starts, no one is exempt. Ask those in Russia, where Stalin is purported to have killed about forty million in his purges. And what about the Cultural Revolution in China during which between five hundred thousand and two million people were killed? You may think you will be spared but in truth, no one is safe once a pogrom has started.

So to quote the theme song from Cops, “Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?” Please think about it, because eventually they will and you who are approving of the genocide of others may become a victim yourself.

  1. I heard a statistic the other day that said 70% of people under 30 do not know what the holocaust is, or believe it was made up. That is a chilling thought.
I too, am not only appalled, but also saddened at the raw ignorance gripping this country. I heard Jen Psaki say the other day this is NOT a Judeo/Christian country. That’s news to me.
I see people holding up signs and just shake my head because you are 100% right, what will they do when the mob comes for them? And make no mistake, it’s coming. Not only for Jews and Christians, but the Muslims have no use for 95% of the people stupidly selling their agenda.

    Just so, Valerie, just so.

A lesson we seemed doomed to learn once again the hard way. The terror of the French Revolution and so many other terrors are soon forgotten when the willfully blinkered, self righteous elite start loading those destined for the guillotine on the timbrels and wind up joining them shortly thereafter.

The Judeo Christian roots of our country are self evident, albeit entwined with the ideas of the misnamed Enlightenment.

Unfortunately, as Ivan Karamazov warned us, “If God does not exist, everything is permissible.”

And we seem hell bent also on denying that existence.

    Literally hell bent.

  3. Valerie, I could not agree more with everything you shared here. I believe ignorance is at an all time high and the fact that people consume what they think as real fact from someone else’s social media feed is leading them to be so deceived.

  4. Yes, it is very difficult for me to watch what is going on in the war. The Palestinians are suffering and there is no way around it. I cannot look at the devastation without feeling sad. Surely, there must be a better solution than killing each other.

  5. When Eisenhower toured his first liberated concentration camp, he wanted the press to document everything, because he knew some day someone would deny the Holocaust even happened. I wonder if he also had the foresight to see his own countrymen praising Hitler and his atrocities in the future?

    • I don’t know. I can’t say he would imagine it but you never know. Students of history know how fickle the mob is and how they can be manipulated to believe incendiary ideas about others. It only takes one match to spark a fire in that kind of atmosphere.

  6. Most people now are ignorant of what happened in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Those yelling about ‘save Gaza’ or ‘death to Jews’ have no idea – we should save everyone, no matter what their ‘religion’ and wish death on no one! Any true ‘religion’ would never advocate for violence!

  7. Humanity doesn’t learn from history and so it’s destined to perpetual repeat. The war in Gaza has overshadowed all other wars.
I’m volunteering in Lviv until the 4th of January and the war in the east is still raging but you don’t hear much on the media these days.
