Which Tree are You Eating From?

From the very beginning, God gave man a choice of eating from two trees. Our very existence would be determined by the tree we ate from. Before we decide which tree to eat from, we should probably look at the fruit that each one offers and the consequences from eating from each tree.

    • I think that in the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve lived in a state of innocence. Once they knew good and evil, they were more like God in that they knew both. In todays society, the Tree of Life (God’s Word and the Holy Spirit) give us our spiritual food. If we just seek knowledge (Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil) without moral teaching (the Bible) we just end up educated but not necessarily moral. (Just a thought)

      • Mythology (in the proper, highest sense of that word) contains much truth. What that truth is can be debatable, however. I have been struggling with the meaning of the mythical trees for years. Elie Wiesel’s answer was that nothing is more important than life. As Richard Elliott Friedman has written in his Commentary on the Torah, the meaning in the Hebrew text is ambiguous. Perhaps the meaning was clearer to many ancient Israelites.

Yes, amorality is unambiguously bad. However, defining anything as “bad” or “evil” indicates a sense of morality. It may be a misguided morality, but it is still a form of morality.
